Day 11 - Metal Bars

Writer's picture: CJ DossCJ Doss

Today was another clinical day. I got to shadow a doctor in Pediatric Surgery. While I did not get to see any surgeries today, I got to see what clinic work is like. And quite honestly, it was amazing. I had so much fun. We got to talk to the patients and see how they were doing after having major surgeries. We got to see their path to recovery. And we got to tell patients that they were healthy again. We had to schedule surgeries to help them breath, move, and even eat. I got to see G-tubes, chest bars, and many more. It was cool to see them coming into the clinic and getting to help. It really solidified pediatrics as a field of interest for me.

I saw some of the cutest families, but also some neglectful families. And my drive to help just flourished. I got to watch an infant get a minor procedure to fix a tongue tie. She was unable to breastfeed well enough to keep herself nourished because of the tie, but as soon as we fixed it, we had the mother try to feed her again. And it was perfect. That baby can now independently and healthily breastfeed. Because of a five minute procedure.

Kids pull at my heartstrings and it was great to get to be in the room with them no matter why they were there. We were there to help them. It was am amazing feeling. I left that clinic smiling because I know that pediatrics is a field that I can be happy in. This clinical made me certain of that. And I am so grateful for that certainty.
