Today we had a wonderful lecture on disabilities. I have a specific interest in disabilities. My mom is a special education teacher so growing up I spent a lot of time with kids who have disabilities. I have tutored many of my mom's students and it always made me feel good when I could make them feel like they fit in. This lecture did an amazing job at explaining the way that autism can affect the way a person thinks.
I think its very important that all healthcare workers understand disabilities. It is important to know how they view the world so that we can provide them the best care. We want our patients to feel safe. I loved this presentation because it brought us an understanding of what our patients could experience. However, I wish we would have learned about more than Down's Syndrome and Autism. I think disabilities education is extremely important for being a healthcare worker. This lecture left me wanting more. I wanted to know about more than autism. I wanted to learn about more intellectual disabilities. Physical Disabilities. Learning Disabilities. All of it. And I hope to get the chance to do so in the future.
Understanding our patients is the key to providing the best level of care. Our patients rely on our ability to help them. If we do not understand the things they face, we cannot provide them a safe environment. It is important that we make an effort to understand our patients and do our best to make them feel safe in our hands.
