Today we started off the day with QPR training. It is a hard topic to discuss but it is important. Our society struggles with mental health issues at an extreme rate. There is a lot of stigma around mental health and being able to talk openly about when you are not okay. I am a strong advocate for mental health outreach so this training was very important to me. People should always have someone to talk to and it is important that there are people out there to offer support. Mental health is important and it should not be overlooked. It would be wonderful if everyone had this type of training. Imagine if everyone had this sort of training. The world would be an amazing place. Think of all the lives we could save if only we asked the question.
This afternoon we had a visit from the Spectrum Group. It was a theatre group for those on the autism spectrum. It was a lot of fun to watch them show us their book. You could really tell how much it meant to them. Organizations like this are amazing. It allowed it's participants to express themselves and their experiences. I'm so glad to have been able to listen to their work and see their success. The group gave everyone a copy of their book. I enjoyed reading it all. My mom teaches students with intellectual disabilities. She enjoyed the book too. And, in fact, she asked if she could take it and use it with her students. The book showed that those with autism can work and live a normal life. She thinks it will help her students believe in themselves. I think it's great that I was able to share this resource outside of MedEx and I hope it will continue to help my mom's students.
