Day 15 - Autonomy

Writer's picture: CJ DossCJ Doss

Today we started the day with our Mid-Tier Check-In. It was a nice little reflection of how I have felt throughout the tier. I have truly enjoyed this tier, it has brought me great friends and great experiences. I have learned so much through my clinical experiences and also through our lectures. Overall, I have loved being part of this tier and I plan to continue as part of MedEx.

After, our check-in, we did Wix of the week. I did not expect to get chosen as wix of the week but I was elated. I enjoy writing these wix's so it meant a lot to get recognized. I wrote from the heart and that's always the most meaningful.

Later on we had an Ethics presentation about Medical Autonomy and Capacity. Dr. Epright discussed a few cases that were very interesting to me. The Dax Cowart case was very interesting to me because a lot of things didn't add up in my head. After suffering from extreme burns, Dax Cowart was subjected to 18 months of painful treatment. Many times he asked to be left alone as he did not want treatment. The thing that does not make sense to me is that he was found to be of sound mind. So he should have been allowed to discontinue treatment. He was competent. It really just got my mind turning. And that is what I love about these lectures. I get to think. I get to think outside the box. Dr. Epright's lectures give me the opportunity to expand my critical thinking skills. It is great skill to develop as I go forth on my healthcare journey and the situations she is presenting to us are things that we might have to face in our career. It is really enlightening to have these experiences now. It allows me to be prepared in the future.
