Today I was a little hesitant about my clinical experience. I was shadowing in Supply Chain Management and I wasn't entirely sure what it was about. However, I got there and had so much fun. They knew that they weren't going to change my career path, but they showed me the importance of their job and how it relates to my own future job. If Supply Chain wasn't there, the hospital would not run. They showed me how their systems work to make sure that each unit gets the supplies they need and that they don't run out.
We started our day in a huddle with the whole department. They discussed how they can better work as a team and the director outlined the goals of the day. Then he recognized staff for good deeds. It was really nice to see a department so positive and outgoing. The director took me with him to some meetings and made an effort to point me out in every meeting to introduce me and thank me for being there. Everyone in the meetings would also take the effort to thank me for being there. It made me feel really good to be thanked and so invited and welcomed.
After the meetings, I spent my time with the coordinator. He took me around and showed me the stock rooms and let me scan everything and put things away. He showed me how simple shortcuts taken by healthcare workers affect his job and eventually their own job as well. While this experience wasn't necessarily something that made me want to change careers, it definitely made me see the importance of the correlation between my future career and supply chain management.
The positivity of the department made the experience absolutely amazing and fun. It made me want to do my best to emulate that same positive environment in my own career, no matter what it may be.
