Day Fifteen

Writer's picture: CJ DossCJ Doss

I woke up today to a beautiful birthday breakfast and many exciting activities to look forward to. My mother had made some fantastic cupcakes for me to bring in for everyone and I was looking forward to spending my birthday with my peers.

Simulation Experience

We started off the day with our final simulation experience. However, this experience was a bit different than our previous experiences. Today, we took what we had learned from the simulation lab and put it together to create fun and informative videos. My group did a video on long bones. We created the idea to care for someone with a broken femur. Even though the video got a little crazy, we had a lot of fun doing it. Through this process, we realized the importance of leadership and listening. Starting out the project, each person was speaking over one another, trying to get their idea heard. For the first ten minutes of work time, we did nothing but disagree on ideas. Finally, someone stepped up to just simply figure out what phone we should use to film with. After this, we started to take each thing step by step. We started to work a lot quicker and a lot better. As we listened to each other, we bounced off new ideas and improved on old ideas. Eventually, we were able to get an amazing video done. As soon as we started to speak our ideas, while also listening to the ideas of others, we were able to create a cohesive project and a working team.

Leadership/Team Building Workshop

Our final lecture of the day was a leadership and team-building workshop. My favorite part of the lecture was the personality tests. The speaker handed us a sheet of paper containing a list of adjectives. She had us rate each adjective 1-4 based on how much we related to it. At the end, we added up each column, and whichever column contained the highest number determined your personality type. Each column had an animal associated with it (Lion, Beaver, Otter, or Golden Retriever). My animal was the Lion. After a few more activities within our respective personality groups, she read off the personality traits (both good and bad) of each group. It was scary to see just how accurate it was and how those personality traits can be perceived by others. What I may perceive as taking control, others may perceive as being controlling. However, it all came down to being respectful of all personality types and working together to create a cohesive relationship. A Lion will be there to take charge and get things done. An Otter will be there to communicate and persuade. A Beaver will be there to make sure everything is done well and to keep things organized. A Golden Retriever will be there to help and to keep everyone calm. Everyone must work together, or you will have a controlling lion, a talkative otter, an obsessive beaver, and a people-pleaser golden retriever. Everyone and everything must work in harmony.

Quote of the Day

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, Ashlyn brought in a cookie cake for my and Emma's birthdays. It meant a lot to stand up there and have a big group sing me happy birthday, each of them smiling and looking as if they meant it. The connections I have made through MedEx are ones that have changed my life. I realize that people truly care, and I just needed to find the right group of people to see that. MedEx has taught me how to be a leader and a follower, and how to combine the two to create a better outcome. I can't wait for day sixteen. I give day fifteen 5 out of 5 stars.
