We only had one activity today, but that activity was a lot of fun. Coming back from the weekend, I was ready for the week and excited for what is to come.
CVT Rotations
Today we went to the cardiovascular center at Patewood and got to learn about ultrasounds. It was a lot of fun. I was in the first rotation, so I got to go through the introduction in person. They explained what an ultrasound does and how to read one. I found it absolutely fascinating.
After the introduction, we got to actually work with the ultrasounds and try them out on each other. My group started with the heart. Norah went first and the instructor had a ton of trouble finding her heart because her bones were so small, and her lungs kept covering it up. It was cool to see the ultrasound itself.
After Norah, I had a chance to be the patient. The instructor said that I had a perfect heart, and it was super cool to see my heart beating and my valves opening and closing. The entire time, I had the song I wrote about the heart stuck in my head. After the ultrasound, I ended up having a reaction to the ultrasound gel. I had to laugh because I seem to react to the most random things.
After the heart ultrasound, we went on to the veins in the legs. It was hard to try and focus on just one vein or artery, as my hands kept wanting to move. It was interesting to see that blood wasn't always pumping through the legs. They showed us the different ways to get the blood pumping, such as breathing or moving your foot.
After that, we got to see the carotid artery in the neck. We got to see how and where it branches off into the interior carotid artery and the exterior carotid artery. We also got to hear it pumping blood. I found it interesting that blood is always pumping to your head but isn't always pumping to your legs and feet.
All in all, the CVT rotation was very informative and just overall enjoyable.

Final Thoughts
While we didn't do a ton today, I truly enjoyed myself. MedEx seems to have an endless supply of wonderous activities, lectures, and programs that keep me truly engaged and excited to wake up (at 6:00AM) every morning. I cannot wait to see what's in store for day seven. I give day six 4 out of 5 stars.
